WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA?

Post 1: What is social media?

In your own words explain what social media is.

Social media is computer-based technology that facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts, and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. ... Users engage with social media via computer, tablet or smartphone via web-based software or web application, often utilizing it for messaging

When people talk about social media, the first networks that come to mind are usually Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. While YouTube may not be your first thought, it needs to become a priority for you moving forward.

YouTube may not be your first thought, it needs to become a priority for you moving forward

Post 2: What are social media platforms?

In this post you must list and briefly describe (in your own words) five different types of social-media applications.

Social Media Platform means a mobile and/or internet-based platform used and controlled by a Seller or any of its Affiliates for the exclusive purpose of promoting the Business, including any profiles or accounts.

*Facebook Platform is the set of services, tools, and products provided by the social networking service Facebook for third-party developers to create their own applications and services that access data in Facebook. The current Facebook Platform was launched in 2010

*TikTok Platform is a short-form, video-sharing app that allows users to create and share 15-second videos, on any topic. TikTok maintains a separate app for the Chinese market, known as Duyin, which has over 300 million active monthly users. The new app's logo is a combination of the Musical.ly and Duyin logos.

*Instagram Platform is a free photo and video sharing app available on Apple iOS, Android and Windows Phone. People can upload photos or videos to our service and share them with their followers or with a select group of friends. They can also view, comment and like posts shared by their friends on Instagram.

*Twitter Platform provide a short-format publish/subscribe network and access points to that network such as www.twitter.com, m.twitter.com and several Twitter-branded mobile clients for iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android devices

*YouTube Platform allows users to upload, view, rate, share, add to playlists, report, comment on videos, and subscribe to other users. It offers a wide variety of user-generated and corporate media videos.

Post 3: Social media considerations/ issues

Explain at least three issues (these could be technological, social, privacy etc) associated with the use of social media tools and applications

Labels for this post: post 3, (plus you should include a label for each of the issues you examine/ explain)

1)  TECHNOLOGY

Issues and considerations regarding sharable data sets for recommender systems in technology enhanced learning.

This paper raises the issue of missing data sets for recommender systems in Technology Enhanced Learning that can be used as benchmarks to compare different recommendation approaches. It discusses how suitable data sets could be created according to some initial suggestions, and investigates a number of steps that may be followed in order to develop reference data sets that will be adopted and reused within a scientific community. In addition, policies are discussed that are needed to enhance sharing of data sets by taking into account legal protection rights. Finally, an initial elaboration of a representation and exchange format for sharable TEL data sets is carried out. The paper concludes with future research needs.

2)   SOCIAL MEDIA

Technology has been responsible for many advances in modern sport, helping us share, learn and communicate more effectively. Use of social media platforms like Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter has led a range of benefits for sport and recreation clubs, but with that has come inevitable issues.

Two common issues in sport include:

  • Cyberbullying - the use of digital technology to threaten, menace, harass, and humiliate an individual or group. In sport, cyberbullying may look like online racism, targeted threats, intimidation to team members and opposition players, coaches and teams, defaming of referees, coaches, management, or unsubstantiated claims of drug-taking or favouritism.   Cyberbullying is a very real problem, and there is a need to explicitly educate players on the dangers of both online abuse and acting appropriately online. Where issues arise and a young person under 18 years is the target, the Office of the eSafety Commissionercan help. The Office works closely with social media partners to remove serious cyberbullying from the internet.
  • Image-based abuse - known colloquially as ‘revenge porn’ or the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, is another harmful online activity which can affect sporting clubs and their members. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner will provide assistance to individuals who have been subjected to image-based abuse.

The Office of the eSafety Commissioner provides good overview of all common social media issues, including:

  • cyberbullying
  • image based abuse
  • cyber abuse
  • offensive or illegal content
  • sexting
  • unwanted contact
  • social engineering
  • social networking.

3)   PRIVACY IN SOCIAL MEDIA : Identification, Mitigation and Applications.

The increasing popularity of social media has attracted a huge number of people to participate in numerous activities on a daily basis. This results in tremendous amounts of rich user-generated data. This data provides opportunities for researchers and service providers to study and better understand users' behaviors and further improve the quality of the personalized services. Publishing user-generated data risks exposing individuals' privacy. Users privacy in social media is an emerging task and has attracted increasing attention in recent years. These works study privacy issues in social media from the two different points of viewsidentification of vulnerabilities, and mitigation of privacy risks. Recent research has shown the vulnerability of user-generated data against the two general types of attacks, identity disclosure and attribute disclosure. These privacy issues mandate social media data publishers to protect users' privacy by sanitizing user-generated data before publishing it. Consequently, various protection techniques have been proposed to anonymize user-generated social media data. There is a vast literature on privacy of users in social media from many perspectives. In this survey, we review the key achievements of user privacy in social media. In particular, we review and compare the state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of the privacy leakage attacks and anonymization algorithms. We overview the privacy risks from different aspects of social media and categorize the relevant works into five groups 1) graph data anonymization and de-anonymization, 2) author identification, 3) profile attribute disclosure, 4) user location and privacy, and 5) recommender systems and privacy issues. We also discuss open problems and future research directions for user privacy issues in social media.

Post 4: What is library 2.0?

In your own words, explain what is library 2.0

On a blog, the content consists of articles (also sometimes called "post" or entries) that the author(s) writes. Yes, some blogs have multiple authors, each writing his/her own articles. Typically blog authors compose their articles in a web-based interface, build into the blogging system itself. Some blogging systems also support the ability to used stand-alone "weblog client" software, which allows authors to write articles offline and upload at a later time.

Post 11: Recommended tools for social media engagement

From your studies and experience choose two social media tools you would recommend as being beneficial to libraries.

Give reasons why you recommend these two applications.

FACEBOOK

Using Facebook can be an effective way for academic libraries to connect with their user community.

By posting updates on Facebook, libraries can inform their users about the library’s programmes and services. They can invite students to attend training sessions, post practical information about the library’s opening times, link to new and existing print and online resources, and update the university community about any new developments. 'Followers' can engage with the library by commenting on posts and sharing them with their friends.

 BLOG

How Blogs Can Help with Marketing

There are dozens of ways that libraries are using blogs already. The most obvious application is for library news, which you need to be able to update frequently and easily. Blogging software helps make this job easy enough for anyone to do it. Here are other ways to use blogs to your advantage:

Promote Library Events: Create a blog that promotes library events and programs. Reach out beyond the visitors to your regular Web site. Set up an RSS feed for your blog and alert everyone in your community that they can include your headlines on their sites or can use an RSS newsreader to see what's up at the library.

E-commerce sites try to turn each visitor into a repeat customer. Libraries can try this too. Put an e-mail subscription form on the blog site and encourage visitors to sign up. This type of permission-based marketing is your chance to send library news straight to the user's in box on a regular basis. It's an opportunity to invite visitors to come back to the library or its Web site over and over again.

Make your blog stand out from the crowd by including some special content that captures readers' interest. For example, include a "quote of the day" from a famous literary work, run a trivia quiz each Friday, or share an interesting fact about your community each week. Some libraries keep lists of "interesting questions and answers" that could be shared. Don't be afraid to develop a unique voice for your blog, whether it's that of a friendly helper that explains mysteries or an authoritative approach that focuses on giving "just the facts."

Support Your Dedicated Users: An obvious hit with most library visitors is finding out what new books, videos, CDs, or DVDs have been added to the collection. Think about setting up topics on your blog for each genre: mysteries, horror, science fiction, romance, and so on. In an academic library, prepare special alerts about new resources and Web sites for particular departments or colleges.

Engage Your Community: Post new book reviews and book award lists. Invite comments and suggestions. Create an online book discussion area by asking readers to recommend books to others.

Support Your Community: Librarians are always looking for ways to offer value-added services. Can you offer a special service with the blog and reach a new audience? A local election news blog that posts announcements about candidate Web sites, nominations, and meetings might be a natural project for libraries that are mandated to make local council minutes and agendas available to the public.

Building New Ties: Are you trying to reach a new area of your community? What about offering a blog in another language to provide short entries on upcoming programs and new resources? Perhaps you are trying to reach out to teachers in order to market library services and to make sure that school visits work effectively for the library and the schools. What about starting a blog-style newsletter that's just for teachers? You can focus on special services for teachers, programs for schools, new research resources, book lists, and seasonal Web sites of interest. Some blogs allow you to have extended entries and include feature articles.

Promoting your library's services, resources, and programs online can be a lot easier with the help of a blog. A great library blog requires three ingredients: inspiration, motivation, and dedication. Inspiration is that "ah-ha" moment when your new marketing idea meshes perfectly with a blog as the delivery vehicle. Motivation is the energy to put good ideas into practice and helps launch the new blog. Dedication is what comes next. It's the hard work that keeps the blog updated with pithy, lively posts on a constant basis. Blogs can be very effective tools for reaching online audiences.
